HISTORY

Sweetwater Baptist Church has a rich and colorful history. 

The church was organized in 1832 as Sweetwater, alias Mt. Lebanon.  Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, was in office at this time.  Former pastor Herman L. Thomas, Jr. described his collection of historical events as feeling he was “compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses”. A fitting reference considering seven of the thirty-two charter members had the last name “Cloud”.

Robert Carson and Thomas Norris were both called as the first pastors of the church. Robert Carson was actually the first pastor and Mr. Norris was the supply pastor.

Just how Sweetwater received its name is a matter of speculation. Tradition says the spring was used by travelers and campers prior to the birth of the Church.

It is also believed by some that the Indians drank from the springs for centuries. With the water being so good as to quench one’s thirst is how the church received the name Sweetwater.

“As Sweet Water South Carolina, Edgefield District, was constituted this day the tenth of March one thousand eight hundred and thirty-two, 1832” is a direct quote from historic records.

We believe that God has always had a people upon the earth to worship and serve Him. One fact holds true and is evident, the people of Sweetwater have always held a great love for the Lord, the Church, and each other.


History Room

The History Room is located in the old sanctuary Chapel building. Our pastor, Dr. Paul Noe, is especially proud of this museum style room which captures many historical artifacts associated with Sweetwater Baptist Church. The room is open at various times for viewing and learning about the past. Dr. Noe's diligence to preserve history is a treasure for the church and community. As we look forward, not many years away, we will celebrate 200 years of ministry.

Step Back in Time

Church felt boards became a staple in Sunday School education in the mid-20th century to visually illustrate Bible stories.  Behind the felt board is the original Church Sanctuary window from 1861.

The use of gold-plated shovels for church groundbreaking ceremonies is a modern, symbolic tradition marking the commencement of construction and signifying a "golden" start .

While viewing the many historical artifacts and reading the numerous plaques, it's worth noting also the beautiful antique furniture throughout the History Room.

This pew was built by church members in the 1800's.  Several time boards and picture books have been created to capture the extensive timeline.

This United States framed flag was flown over the United States Capitol the day the new sanctuary was officially opened.  Items from Romania and the Holy Land as well as a display of Mr. Potato Head Covid survivors  are included in the glass showcase!
